Aziz Qaisi was born on 1st July 1931 in Hyderabad. 'Qaisi' was his 'takhallus' . Incidentally there is only one 'Qaisi' in the world!His real name was Aziz Mohammed Khan.He graduated from Osmania University. He was well versed in Urdu, Persian and Arabic.During the 1950's the famous Urdu poet Makhdoom Mohiuddin, with left leanings, was at the height of his popularity and fame. Makhdoom inspired him to join the left movement. However he was never a member of the communist party.He was an active member of the Progressive Writer's Movement.Aziz Qaisi' poetry is devoid of cliche`s. He often experimented with words, expression, style, form. One could never blame him to have followed or imbibed what was popular. His poetry whether one regards it as good or bad, has a unique individualistic streak.'Aina-dar-Aina' (Mirror within mirror) and 'Gardbad' (After The Whirlwind) are two collections of his poems that have been published. He has written a novellete 'Doosre Kinare Tak' in Urdu. He has written a number of short stories. He was a well known critic of Urdu poetry. When he shifted to Mumbai in the late 50s' he worked as a journalist to make a living. In the 60's he joined the then famous film making studio Filmistan as a permanent writer. He also wrote radio plays and radio programmes. He quit Filmistan in the late 60's. From the early 70's onwards writing for cinema kept him very busy. He wrote screenplay and dialogue for over 200 films. He also penned lyrics for some of the films. 'Kunwara Baap', 'Dayavaan', 'Indrajeet', 'Ek Baap Che Bete', 'Apne Apne','Aakhri Goli', 'Yaari Dushmani', 'Dushman Duniya Ka', 'Sarkari Mehamaan' 'Nishaan' are some of the films he wrote.Aziz Qaisi was honoured by the Maharashtra State Urdu Academy in 1990 for overall contribution to Urdu Literature. The Maharashtra State Urdu Academy annnounced on his death that they would publish his entire works. The Academy has not kept its promise.Aziz Qaisi died 0n 30th September 1992 of lung cancer.
